Jessica Hische on the transition from procrastination to passion

The work you do while you procrastinate is probably the work you should be doing for the rest of your life.

One of the best advices I’ve heard in a long time. Also, check out her work at jessicahische.is.

New lens: Sigma 50mm F1.4 EX DG HSM

img_2286.jpg

Last week I bought a new lens for my Canon 5D mark II. I’ve been dying to get a fast prime lens and since the Canon 50mm F1.2 and 85mm F1.2 were a bit out of my price range, I went looking for the cheaper 50mm lenses. The are two choices, the Canon EF 50mm F1.4 USM and the Sigma 50mm F1.4 EX DG HSM.

I went with the Sigma, mainly for its superior built quality. The lens is build like a tank and feels really good on the 5Dmk2. It’s considerably larger and heftier than the other 50mm lenses (see comparison) but as the Canon 5Dmk2 is pretty large camera, the larger lens actually looks better on it.

The focus on the lens is sharp and I haven’t had any problems with it yet, the focusing ring requires more force than I would like (this is a problem when manually focusing during video shooting) but it might loosen up after some use and the DOF on F1.4 is ridiculous.

Stay tuned for more photos with this lens!

Christmas drive time-lapse

Shot this while driving to spend Christmas with my parents. Camera was set on a tripod between the seats, on a 20 second interval.

Camera: Canon mark II
Lens: Canon 24-70mm/2.8f
Edited with Quicktime and iMovie.

The song is "Sweet Disposition" by The Temper Trap.

MacSlaps!

The MacSlap I ordered arrived today and I rushed home to put it on my Macbook immediately. Had a hard time deciding between this one and the Mario, but the Lego guy was just “too cute” to pass by.

You can get these and others from macslaps.com.

My Day, Yesterday

Video of November 19th, 2009. Filmed throughout the day and edited the next day. This was shot using Canon 5D Mark2, Canon 24-70mm/f2.8 and Sigma 50mm/f1.4 lenses. All the material is straight from the camera and edited together with Final Cut Pro.

This video is my first submission to Flickr group called My Day, Yesterday.

The idea is to record a day in your life, compress it down to 90 seconds and publish it the next day. You’re not supposed to add any music or sound effects, just use what the camera recorded.

Jason Fried on meetings • IskoSalminen.com

[Meetings are] a huge waste of time, and they’re costly. It’s not one hour; it’s 10, because you pulled 10 people away from their real work. Plus, they chop your day into small bits, so you have only 20 minutes of free time here or 45 minutes there.

Creative people need unstructured time to get in the zone. You can’t do that in 20 minutes.

Jim Coudal on deadlines

The best work that we’ve ever done is work that was done in a very short period of time with the deadline hanging over our head.
— Jim Coudal, FOWD 2009, London

I love this quote by Jim Coudal (from Coudal Partners). I first heard it at FOWD London 2009, wrote it down and as an act of fate, was reminded of it due to recent events.
